Special Web Projects Consultant
Self-employed (2006 - Present)
As a contract-based project consultant, I evaluate the needs of each individual client to determine the technologies and development methods that are most applicable to the customer's unique case. My clients have varied in size from family-owned restaurants to global web hosting providers, with proportionally different needs. In each case, I oversee development of the project from conceptualization to implementation.
Project Development Manager
Grupo Promotor Kipen SL, Alcala la Real, Spain (2005-2006)
As the Project Development Manager, I designed and implemented a web-based interface to a web hosting system based on FreeBSD and Fedora Core 4 Linux. My core responsibilities with Kipen included direct, hands-on systems and network management as well as design, integration, and implementation of multi-OS hosting control panels, secure online ordering/billing, and business accounting systems. Additionally, I researched and evaluated wide-coverage (~1km radius) implementations of 802.11 wireless networking protocol utilizing PlanetNetworks hardware and FreeRADIUS.
Chief Technology Officer
USTCO (accessoryXpress, LLC.), San Jose, California (2002-2005)
As the CTO for accessoryXpress, LLC throughout its existence, I oversaw the technical planning and direction for an online retailer specializing in audio/video accessories. Specific areas of responsibility included maintaining wide-area communications utilizing VPNs between the office and the warehouse, automated inventory/ordering, online accounting/merchandising, automated order generation, and product movement analysis. We finally closed our doors in 2005 after geographical divergence between the three partners became a serious obstacle to continued operation.
Merchandising & Operations/Purchasing Supervisor
Fry's Electronics, San Jose, California (2001-2002)
At one of the USA's largest electronics superstore chains, I was responsible for purchasing in the Appliances/Telecommuications area. My 'co-buyers' and I negotiated costs with vendors, evaluated new products for sale in Fry's stores and online, and oversaw the transition during the Outpost.com buyout. Additionally, I was responsible for performing duties of the District Managers and Department Director in their (frequent) absence.
Infrastructure Developer, iPlanet Division
Netscape Communications Corp., Mountain View, California (2000-2001)
This was a very unique experience. The team I was assigned to was responsible for the maintenance and operation of a 1200-station mixed Solaris and NT4 environment used for training system administrators in the deployment and implementation of the various Sun/Netscape iPlanet server products. Additionally, we managed, operated, and staffed the Web-based Training studio located in the former Netscape Building 10. As a small, cohesive unit, we developed and integrated some of the key web-based training technologies in use in the early part of this decade. My responsibilities included integrating text-based real-time chat with the streaming audio/video applications (using a combination of time-tested IRC daemon software, and heavily-modified open-source web-based IRC applications) and performing routine systems administration of Solaris and NT servers in the lab environment.
Director of Internet Services
KGM Web Design & Development, LLC., De Pere, Wisconsin (1998-2000)
KGM Web was initially a small company started by my friend Kurt Mazanet, while we were in college. We rapidly grew into a regional player in the web development market, while at the same time acquiring a solid niche in customized software for the Catholic Diocese of Green Bay. The expansion of the company into a regional dial-up provider expanded my responsibilities accordingly, as I managed the web development and ISP tech teams simultaneously. In addition to my managerial role, I was also a frequent contributor to the software division's output.
